Dobby’s Story
Dobby was found by the incredible people at Last Chance Arkansas Rescue, and was treated at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He was a traumatic triple amputee at the carpus (wrist), with a litany of other issues, including severe malnourishment. Multiple teams (surgical, integrative medicine, ICU, etc) worked around the clock to nurse this sweet boy back to health. For the next several months, Dobby was back-and-forth between his amazing foster family and LSU. He began to grow stronger, and was eventually fit with prosthetics.
I first met Dobby during my clinical year at LSU, and was one of the students involved in his case from the beginning of his journey. Prior to making the switch to veterinary medicine, I worked as a Physician Assistant in orthopaedic surgery in human medicine for a number of years. I had been on and off of crutches since approximately the age of seven due to sports injuries, and have had my ankles reconstructed multiple times, so I understood what Dobby was going to go through, and the long road ahead of him.
Dobby has grown considerably, and is a little rockstar in his prosthetics. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, love, and patience helped him tremendously in his journey. Dobby has a fiery personality, so we try to get the most out of his acupuncture, and augment it with herbs, food therapy, and smokeless moxibustion when indicated. He also loves PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) mats.
He no longer walks like a horse with stringhalt (akin to that of a marionette). He can actually run in his prosthetics now, loves to show off his life jacket at the beach, and learned how to dig in the sand with his nubs.
Dobby has become an official member of the Go Team Therapy Dogs which enables him to bring smiles and goodwill to: hospitals, rehab centers, schools, fire houses, etc. Recently, Dobby befriended members of a wheelchair basketball team. He had an amazing time checking out their hardware, and showing off his legs and wagon. When he gets tired, or when it’s too hot outside, Dobby hitches a ride in his wagon.
Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association recently honored Dobby as it’s Pet of the Year, and he’s currently being featured as Mr. October in The Paw Print 2025 Dog Calendar.
